Summertime fun is winding down after a season of swimming in pools, riding bikes, and going to the beach with the family. Many families are getting ready to send their children back to school now that August has arrived. Parents are going to the shop to stock up on pens, pencils, clothing, and other school necessities to give them the best chance for a successful year.
To find out exactly what parents are purchasing, where they are shopping, and how much they are spending this year, Mycheckoutcoupon.com commissioned a survey. Listed below are the findings from our Back-to-School & Labor Day Survey.
Many families have a history of shopping for school supplies. Every year, both kids and parents visit the store to look for the newest styles of clothing, footwear, backpacks, and school supplies. We polled more than 2,000 American parents and found that 99.3% of those in grades K–12 planned to shop in some capacity for back-to-school. This year, K–12 parents are expected to pay an average of $221.24 on per child. Depending on how big your family is, that might add up quickly!
It’s conceivable that parents of eleventh graders will pay even more this year. Our survey’s findings show that parents of children in this age group anticipate spending an average of $272.82 per child. Parents of seventh graders will spend, on average, $262.78 per child, according to projections. Tenth grade parents anticipate spending the third most, at an average of $248.43 per child.
Third graders, on the other hand, are anticipated to be the easiest to shop for. According to the findings of our poll, parents of third graders anticipate spending $198.62 per child this year. Following third grade spending are kindergarten spending ($206.49 per child) and first grade spending ($203.96 per child).
Being able to balance work and family obligations while children are out of school can be difficult for parents during the summer. While many parents relish the extra time they have with their children over the summer, many are eager for them to return to the classroom once it is over. When asked if they were excited for their children to start school again, 80.1% of the parents either agreed (39.2%) or strongly agreed (40.9%). 69.8% of parents who were questioned about their children’s excitement for returning to school said yes.
The Labor Day holiday often comes either just before or just after the start of the school year. Labor Day is observed on September 2 this year. Labor Day Weekend is often used by parents to take their kids on vacation. According to our poll, 77.3% of parents intend to take their kids on vacation during the Labor Day holiday. The average journey time for those who are going is predicted to be 2.35 days. We discovered that the majority of parents (77%) are preparing to travel by vehicle because of how brief this break is. The beach (22.5%), relatives’ houses (20%), and cities (14.9%) are the most sought-after locations.
Our survey focuses on state variations and similarities while also delving deeply into national trends and behaviors. The costliest city for back-to-school shopping per child is Washington DC ($325). Minnesota ($270.45) and Arkansas ($299.90) are next. Per child, the average national expenditure was $207.30. You can see on the map below where various states stand on back-to-school expenditures. How does your own spending pattern compare to the typical expenditure in your state?
The study had 2,004 participants in total and was done online. Multiple-choice, single-answer, and open-ended solutions were all included in the questions. Researchers attempted to ascertain each respondent’s intention for open-ended responses. Misspellings were disregarded, and they rewarded responses that were nearly phonetically correct.
52% of the participants in the study were women, 47% were men, and 1% did not respond. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were represented. With a median age of 35, their ages ranged from 18 to 72. Based on the population of all adults in the U.S., the margin of error was 2.23%, with a confidence range of 95%.
